Major Points About Working Hours and Overtime in the UAE

Here are the main regulations regarding work hours for private sector employees in the UAE, as detailed on the official UAE Government website:

Working Hours

  • Under UAE Labour Law, the normal working hours for the private sector are 8 hours per day or 48 hours per week. However, these hours may vary based on specific economic sectors or job categories.
  • Commuting from home to the office is not counted as part of working hours, except for certain job categories.
  • If an employee works for multiple employers, they are not obligated to work beyond the hours specified in their employment contract unless they provide written consent.
  • If an employee requests to work remotely and it is approved, the employer must set clear working hours.
  • Employees are entitled to breaks during working hours, which should total at least one hour, and they cannot work more than five consecutive hours without a break.
Overtime

  • Employees may be required to work additional hours, but these extra hours cannot exceed two in a day.
  • If an employee works beyond regular hours, they will be paid their standard hourly wage plus an additional 25 percent. This rate increases to 50 percent for overtime performed between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. Shift workers are exempt from this policy.
