Everything You Should Know About Food Trucks in UAE: Licensing, Regulations & More

With improving weather, the UAE is experiencing a rise in outdoor markets and food festivals, offering aspiring entrepreneurs a prime platform to showcase their culinary skills. Renowned for its multicultural population, the UAE continues to thrive as a hub for entrepreneurs, especially in the food sector, catering to a vast array of international cuisines.

Although starting a traditional brick-and-mortar restaurant can be both challenging and expensive, food trucks are gaining popularity as a stylish and adaptable alternative. These mobile dining options, serving everything from ice cream to gourmet burgers, have become a favourite in cities like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah. Entrepreneurs can run food trucks in various locations as long as they adhere to local regulations and secure the required permits.

Dubai Food Truck Permits:
The Dubai Municipality oversees food truck permits for both events and permanent operations. Entrepreneurs must adhere to strict regulations to ensure food safety and meet licensing criteria.

Key Requirements for a Food Truck License in Dubai:

  • Event-based Trucks: Ensure food suppliers are licensed and comply with Dubai’s Food Code. Trucks must have proper facilities for food storage, preparation, and display.
  • Permanent Trucks: Obtain a business license and provide a location contract signed by the property owner.
  • Registration: All food trucks must register on Dubai Municipality’s FoodWatch platform to comply with food safety standards.

Documents Needed for a Dubai Food Truck Permit:

  • No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from the landlord.
  • Approval from Dubai Municipality’s planning and drainage departments.
  • A registered trade license for the truck’s operating location.

Cost & Processing Time:
The permit fee is AED 160, processed within one day. For permanent locations, permit validity depends on the lease contract, up to a maximum of one year.

Sharjah Food Truck Permits:
In Sharjah, permits are managed via the Sharjah Executive Council website, catering to individuals, private businesses, and local organizations.

Required Documents for Sharjah Mobile Food Vehicle Permits:

  • Request letter.
  • No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from the property owner.
  • Map indicating the vehicle’s location.

Cost & Processing Time in Sharjah:
The permit costs AED 3,000 and is typically processed within one day.

Sharjah Food Truck Permits:

Abu Dhabi provides two food truck permit options—monthly and yearly—accessible through the TAMM platform. The monthly permit costs Dh500, while the yearly permit is priced at Dh3,000. Entrepreneurs need to submit comprehensive documentation, including vehicle photographs and approvals from authorities such as the Department of Municipalities and Transport or ADNOC.

Key requirements include securing approval for parking spots, adhering to food safety standards, and following advertising rules. Additionally, the truck's trade name must be displayed in Arabic, as specified in the commercial license.
